When Samsung Released it’s 2015 (updated) version of it’s original Gear VR’s that were primarily intended for ‘early adopters’ many thought that it would bring VR into mainstream appeal. Samsung made adjustments to it’s original headset in order to effectively attempt to do so. The question is, did Samsung get this headset right? In this Samsung Gear VR Headset Review, we will be going over all of this and more in our Samsung Gear VR Headset review.
A Samsung Gear VR Headset Review:
1. Hardware.
When it comes to hardware, Samsung significantly stepped up their game with this particular headset in comparison to the older model. While the headset is quite large, it is actually fairly comfortable. Because the headset itself features soft foam padding around the eyes and throughout the nose bridge, it feels as comfortable as holding a headset on your face could feel. Another good thing about the headsets hardware is the fact that it allows you to wear your glasses if needed without having them feel as though they are totally in the way. With this latest iteration, Samsung made the unit around 19% lighter which really helps the headset feel much more comfortable overall. The controls are primarily built-in to the touch pad which you can easily distinguish and feel while you have the headset on. Unfortunately, there are no headphones or audio system included with the headset. But if you really want to experience VR in it’s purest form and really immerse yourself into it, you are going to want to invest in either some Bluetooth or wired headphones to hook up to your unit while using it.
2. Using It.
The setup is very easy and it can get you up and running in no time. Once your phone is connected and loaded into the headset, you are going to be all ready to go. Once the phone docks, it will immediately launch the Oculus Home Screen. Therefore, you are not going to have to worry about navigating on the Android OS. Because there are constantly new VR applications coming out each and everyday, it is certainly a work in progress, but the potential is certainly there. And a lot of applications already really provide a unique and immersive experience such as games and media viewing applications like Netflix.
3. Affordability.
The fact is, this is easily one of the best and most affordable solutions on the marketplace if you are looking to get into VR at all. While there are cheaper options available such as Google CardBoard, you are generally not going to get as fluid and quality of an experience either with the software nor the hardware. Therefore, Samsung and Oculus have a clear winner when it comes to affordability.
In conclusion, this is easily Samsung’s best offering to date and it is certainly going to get more people interested in VR as a whole. While you do need a newer Samsung model to even use the headset, it is something that every owner with a compatible Samsung should consider getting at some point.
